What a lovely little girl! She’s so fortunate to be so beautiful, and not only that—she’s kind, well-behaved, and has a gorgeous doll too. With so many gifts, you’d think nothing bad could ever happen to her. But no: her beauty and sweetness spark a very ugly emotion in others—envy. Her stepsisters resent her because everything seems to come so easily for her, and her stepmother envies her because everyone wants to marry her while her own daughters go unnoticed. So they all try to make her life difficult, or even make her disappear for good. How to get rid of Vassilissa? Simple: send her into the woods to the home of the fearsome Baba Jaga, a witch so cruel she’ll surely take care of her once and for all. To escape her fate, little Vassilissa must use all her charm and wits, and she will succeed—you’ll see she does. It’s a story about the land that generously welcomes us if we show it respect, yet punishes us if we fail to pay it proper heed.
