“Tower of Confusion” is the starting point for Balal, a performance inspired by the story of the Tower of Babel and its relevance to the modern world.

The tower, commissioned by a king, was meant as a challenge to God, an attempt to ascend into the heavens. But God’s response was to confound human language, so that, no longer understanding one another, people could not complete the tower.

Over the centuries, this narrative has become a paradigm of humanity’s arrogance and its desire for unbounded power.

Through contemporary dance, the performance explores the behavior of today’s society—marked increasingly by arrogance, individualism, presumption, egocentrism, and narcissism. It is a will to dominate that fosters confusion and division in an ever more fluid society.

How, then, can we get humanity to rethink its condition? How can we shape the new social order of our century?
